Your Sewing Space

September 13, 2025 - September 13, 2025

Whether sewing at home or in a work environment, it is essential to have a practical and safe work space. This will allow you to work efficiently and minimise the chance of any errors or accidents occurring.

It will also make your sewing experience a more relaxed and enjoyable one.

WORK SURFACE

The first area you need to focus on is the work surface. A table for cutting is essential, this preferably needs to be a high table at which you can stand and cut. This table needs to be flat to ensure the swift and smooth cut of the fabric. The average width of the fabric is 1.4meters so you need to allow for this. Ensuring a smooth service to cut on it is also important when using a cutting matt.

LIGHTING

It is always important to have good lighting when sewing or cutting out a pattern. This is as much for safety as ensuring you can see well enough to avoid making mistakes. The best light is of course natural light so try and secure a position near a large window. If daylight is not sufficient, artificial light can also be useful. Try and sew by day when you can.

STORAGE

A tool box is useful for storing the small tools that come with sewing. It is also easy to carry with you when on the move. It is an easy way to stay organised to ensure a quick production to make sure you know where everything is kept.

CHAIR

Make sure you have a comfortable chair as you may be sewing from for hours therefore it is important to keep your back supported to avoid any injuries. You should also invest in an adjustable chair to ensure you can sit at the right height for a sewing machine.

FABRIC STORAGE

Keeping your fabric stored well is important to prevent it from being eaten by moths. They are particularly attracted to natural fabrics such as wool. Also try and keep the fabrics in order by colour and type. You will be able to find exactly what you are looking for when you need to if you are organised.

(Try and have a dedicated space to sew so you know where everything is kept. You should have somewhere you can go to dedicate your time to your production)
