Garment Manufacturing

Manufacturing is undoubtablely a hugely important part of fashion and fashion design. Traditionally in the olden days cothing was made at home as one of many one-off pieces. Over the past decades manufacturing processes have really revolutionised intoroducing Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology which has made producing garments much quicker and more efficient for us!
CAM allows information to be sent electronically which is very quick and accurate. Computer aided manufacture also makes it easier to make alterations to designs whether it is size or colour. As CAM is done with the use of a computer it is very easy to copy old designs as well as create new ones.
CNC can be used to electronically pick up and transfer fabrics from one place in a factory to another, cut out the fabric, carry out the embroidery and buttonholing. As you can see, a robot is baisically doing all the hard work making it much easier for assembly! This is a very fast and cost effective way to manufacture garment as labour costs will be kept low.
A manufacturers job is to closely analyse the samples and protopes that the designer has produced and find a cost effective way to manufacture the garment on a bigger scale. Maufacturers have to work to schedules which outline all the processes they will need to carry out to produce the garments. Ethical, social and enviromental issues need to be considered when manufacturing and the manufacturer will need to ensure that the garment meets all deadlines, is safe and is of a high quality.
