Worked Loops
This is used frequently with children’s wear or small openings that meet edge to edge but do not overlap.
They are also useful for a small under collar button for garments with a main front opening that button up to the neck.
- Complete neatening the garment first then add the worked loop.
- Place a thin piece of card behind the button loop and hold in place with two pins of the diameter of the button.
- Place a third pin so that the pin enters the card half way across the diameter of the button away from the edge of the opening.
- Securely fasten a thread at one pin passing behind the third pin so that the thread rests easily make a stitch across the fold at the next pin.
- Return the same way between the two pins back again, making three loops in all, make a further small stitch to hold the thread.
- Remove the pins and card
- Using the thread work loop stitch over the strands.
- Stitches should be close and firm with the looped edge outwards.
Hooks and Eyes
Hooks and eyes are used when the strain put onto the opening requires a hook and eye.
This is used mostly for waistbands and as a secure finish at the neck edge of a zip fastener. Hooks are available in large to very small sizes. They can also come in black and white or metal.
Note: special hooks are available for skirts, shorts or trousers, that are flat and strong, especially designed for the waist band.
Fasten thread with a double stitch where it will not be visible. Slip needle through fabric to the ring and work your way around the ring. Finish with three straight stitches across the hook between the hook and the hump and fasten off.
