Broken Needle Policy Report

January 26, 2025 - January 26, 2025

The company recognises that it has a responsibility to operate and demonstrate the effective prevention of metal contamination in products made at The Factory.

The Factory operates a system of prevention and, as a final check, detection.

Needles

No loose needles (new, broken or otherwise) are allowed to be kept in the production area.

It is the responsibility of all employees and sub-contractors to report broken or loose needles to the Head of Admin, or an appointed responsible deputy, immediately.

All such needles (including all broken pieces) must be collected by the Head of Admin or appointed responsible deputy and placed in a clear plastic bag. Details should be recorded in the needles policy file kept in the office. The plastic bag containing the needle should be attached to the record sheet.

A sample Needle Record Sheet is attached. This sheet should be used for all replacement needles ”“ for broken or blunt needles and when changing needle type. All parts of the form should be completed by the appointed responsible person and signed by them and the machinist.

All parts of a broken needle must be accounted for. If any part cannot be accounted for, any garments that may be affected must be isolated and inspected to ensure no needle parts are in them. The suspect garments should not be released until all needle parts are accounted for. When parts cannot be found the Factory Manager should be informed so that the necessary action can be taken.

The Head of Admin is responsible for maintaining this system.

Regular checks are be made by the factory management to ensure that no loose needles have been overlooked.

Needles are kept in a secure location in the office and are only issued (and recorded) by the responsible person.

As part of the prevention of needle breakages old needles are replaced by new needles at appropriate times.

Pins and Staples

Pins must not be used in the production area.

Staples must not be used in the production area.

General Housekeeping

Equipment such as scissors and clippers are securely attached to workstations where practical. Otherwise they are counted in and counted out by the manager or an appointed responsible person.

Loose poppers, studs etc are kept in appropriate containers and the correct number issued for production when required. Any unused metal components are returned to the trimmings store.

Metal Detection

Hand-held metal detectors are used as a final check when appropriate to ensure garments are free from contamination.
