Introducing Tramps & Thieves A Boutique for the New

25-01-2025

Take a walk around the newly developed Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane and its accompanying side streets and you can begin to see why the area has been labelled ‘style conscious central.’ Home to numerous galleries, sample sales, bars and vintage emporiums fashion addicts are indeed spoilt for choice.

In the midst of all this urban chic action is a brand new boutique set up by Mavrick Stylianou and Steven Colburn. Mavrick toyed with the idea of setting up shop for a number of years, so when the offer of a Hanbury Street shop practically fell into his lap – the opportunity of course, was too good to miss.

“The initial idea was to set up a boutique that showcases the work of young designers. Well made, unique designs that you cannot find anywhere else. We are particularly interested in menswear designers – even though we also stock womenswear – I feel that there is a lack of interesting menswear out there and a need to readdress that balance,” explains Mavrick. He should know after all, he designs menswear himself and is constantly checking out what’s new on the scene.

“So far we’ve been approached by a lot of interesting talent but I have to admit that I am very picky and have a certain style in mind that I think will work well in the shop,” he continues. “I particularly like classic lines that are combined with casual/streetwear elements. So far I’ve seen quite a few graduates, which is great as we want to promote young British based designers – but there has been a problem with quality. As a new boutique we need to provide pieces that are well made otherwise customers are not going to come back for more,” says Mavrick.

Tramps & Thieves currently stocks the likes of Hansun Greys – tailoring with a twist for men and women, one-off embroidered t-shirts and ties by Spoon, mismatch designs by Mav along with a range of interesting accessories. Mavrick explains the Tramps & Thieves mission; “The plan is to offer designers a space in a retail environment and while we aim to provide a rotation of talent we would like to keep on those that sell well and help promote them.”

As for the boutique itself Steven and Mavrick have gone for a comfortable, intimate and homely feel. “It’s the kind of place you can pop in have a browse and a cup of tea while you try stuff on,” says Mavrick. “At the moment we are still in the initial opening stages and are focused on building up a good pool of quality designers. By February 2006 we hope to have a proper launch party to showcase all the designers during London Fashion Week.”
