George at ASDA Return For CPPD Training

ASDA CPPD sept 2017The group of assistant buyers, merchandisers, designers and technologists commenced their CPPD training workshop with an overview and introduction of the garment life cycle by CEO Jenny Holloway. Jenny’s frank discussion on what an ethical, compliant factory should look like provided an insight into what is SMETA approved, what is Fast Forward, what is cabbage and dirty tricks – 16 on 16 off.

This was followed by a tour of the Factory reviewing each process of how a factory operates, considerations for a retailer when dealing with factories, how AQLs are conducted in the factory environment and a demonstration of the quality control process.During the tour an observational task was set to see how many of the procedures been put in place to ensure the factory was fully ethical and compliant could be spotted by the cohort.

Upon finishing their tour of the factory and time with Jenny, the group were presented with the opportunity to have a practical session with Senior Pattern Cutter Debbie.  Here they discovered how fitting sessions impact a factory’s lead time, saw working examples of incorrect fits for fitting sessions, reviewed examples of faulty garments and found out how to correct the issues, evaluate reasons of poor fit and review patterns. Finally Production Manager and Director Caroline Ash shared her expertise in how factories calculate standard minutes, why deliveries are late when fabric is on time, what is an open costing and how to verify supplier costings and much more!

Overall the feedback was fantastic with comments including:

“I found this day really useful to help get an idea of a factory set up. The second half of the day with fit issues was particularly useful to go through common issues. Lovely knowledgeable people who have been really helpful and willing to answer any questions. Valuable day.” Bethan, Assistant Technologist
