The Launch of the Tailoring Academy

13-11-2019

Newsletter 13th November 2019

Dear all,

It’s official, London’s first state-of-the-art Tailoring Academy is here and ready to educate a new generation of tailors and skilled production workers.

This would not have been possible without funding from the ‘Good Growth Fund’ and Haringey Council. Additional funding and support has been generously provided by Clothworkers’ Foundation, Optitex EFI, Vetigraph, Gerber Technologies, Eastman Staples, K Sewing, Rupitex Fabrics, Marcos Trimmings and Telestia.

Also a big shout out for Jan Kattein Architects – the space really does look fantastic.

CEO of Fashion-Enter ltd Jenny Holloway said: “The continual rising of demand for UK manufacturing has created a skills gap that has been part-supported by the Fashion Technology Academy but now finite skills are required for Tailoring. When I was a buyer for M&S we bought tailoring extensively from the UK – these days are surely going to return and the Tailoring Academy will be the perfect learning environment for specialised fine skills required in pattern making, cutting and tailored stitching. Sincere thanks to everyone who has made the Tailoring Academy opening possible.”

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, added: “Fashion manufacturing is seeing a resurgence in this area of London, and this project will make a big difference in ensuring that trajectory continues. The Tailoring Academy will upskill London’s next generation of makers – whether starting their own businesses, or joining the skilled workforce required by modern manufacturers.”

Cutting the Ribbon at Artspace 5

Last week our very own CEO, Jenny Holloway, was invited to cut the ribbon at at Assembil’s Studio at Collage Artspace 5 – a permanent home for artists in Wood Green. Thanks to the Mayor’s Good Growth Initiative and a long-term partnership with the regeneration team at Haringey Council Artspace has been able to offer 80,000 square feet of affordable studio space to local creatives.

Artspace 5 is also houses the Roj Women Textiles workshop. The Roj Women Association was founded 10-years ago to provide services to young minority ethnic girls and women migrated to the United Kingdom from Kurdish regions fleeing from war, persecution, oppression and discrimination within Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The Textiles workshop aims to create the space and facilities for Kurdish women to rekindle with the weaving and seamstress skills they have been taught from a young age by the older generation of women. Jenny also met with the various artists and community groups such as the Roj Women’s Association and Sophie from Assembil Books who have made Artspace 5 their home.

With Thanks to Ethical Brand Directory

Last week Belles of London joined other ethical brands to showcase on Ethical Brand Directory’s ‘Ethical & Sustainable Edit’ stand at the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ Fair at London, Olympia. It was a great opportunity to present Belles to a consumer audience at the week long event. A special thanks to Roberta, founder of the Ethical Brand Directory, for including our in-house brand.
