Mental Health Awareness Week 11th – 17th May: Creativity, Community and Wellbeing Through Fashion
12-05-2026
At Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL) and the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA), we see every day how creativity can positively impact wellbeing, confidence and connection. From sewing and repair classes to upcycling workshops and community meet-ups, fashion can be far more than the creation of clothing – it can be a powerful tool for self-expression, learning and mental wellbeing.
This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is an opportunity to reflect on the important role creativity plays in helping people feel connected, calm and empowered.
Recent NHS-supported research highlighted in The Healing Power of Creativity: Exploring Arts and Crafts explains how creative activities can reduce stress, improve emotional wellbeing, enhance confidence and encourage social connection. Activities such as sewing, knitting, drawing and making engage the mind in mindful, focused ways that promote relaxation and emotional expression. And at FEL and FTA, we witness these benefits first-hand.

Sewing, Repair and Upcycling: More Than Practical Skills
Whether someone joins us for a short sewing course, attends a repair workshop, or learns how to upcycle existing garments, the experience often becomes broader in the sense of building confidence, mixing with like-minded individuals and giving the brain a chance to relax and focus on one task.
The process of creating with your hands encourages concentration and mindfulness, helping participants step away from everyday pressures and digital overload. Sewing in particular offers a calming rhythm and sense of achievement, while upcycling encourages creativity, sustainability and problem-solving.
Many learners tell us that attending workshops gives them:
- A sense of purpose and achievement
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
- Opportunities to meet like-minded people
- A supportive community environment
- Time away from stress and anxiety
- The joy of learning something new
Our community-focused workshops also help combat loneliness and isolation by bringing people together in welcoming, inclusive spaces where creativity becomes a shared experience.

Hope-FX: Fashion, Creativity and Early Intervention
One particularly inspiring initiative FEL has founded is the Hope-FX project. Since 2023, Hope-FX has been working with the North London Mental Health Trust across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington as part of its Early Intervention and Prevention programme.
The initiative has included courses and workshops that give young people hands-on experience in fashion illustration, pattern cutting, sewing and in both traditional and digital printing techniques.
The programme has been highly successful, delivering meaningful engagement for young people through creativity, skills development and positive social interaction. The impact of Hope-FX has been so significant that it was nominated for a major award with the Health Service Journal (HSJ).
Hope-FX demonstrates how fashion and creativity can support mental wellbeing, build confidence and provide young people with practical pathways for self-expression, connection and future careers.

The Healing Power of Creativity

The NHS has compiled an article that highlights that creative activities can:
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Support emotional expression
- Improve focus and cognitive skills
- Build self-esteem and resilience
- Encourage social connection and belonging
These are values embedded throughout the work we do at FEL and FTA every day.
As Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us, wellbeing is supported not only through healthcare services, but also through community, creativity and meaningful human connection.
Sometimes something as simple as learning to sew, repairing a garment, creating a print design or sharing ideas in a workshop can become the starting point for greater confidence, wellbeing and hope.
