Newsletter 10th June 2015 – Which Fashion Grad Landed an Internship at Dior? Read on to find out…

Dear all,

Exciting times our in-house label Belles of London will be showcased on TV this summer! This week we attended a test filming session with key Belles of London styles, in print and plain. The prints for the collection have been sourced from an Italian mill that works directly with top design houses such as Chanel, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana amongst others. We have been allocated a one-hour slot in July for live filming (no pressure then!) and will announce the date and time in due course.

CEO of FashionCapital and Fashion Enter Ltd Jenny Holloway commented: “We named the brand Belles of London because it’s a real team effort by the galls!  It’s our first venture into our own label and I am so proud of the entire team.  It’s just a shame it will be my mug shot on TV when there’s a team of far better looking ladies that should be on there!”

Meet the Manufacturer #2

The second edition of Meet the Manufacturer was another resounding success and the FashionCapital team were privileged to be a part of the UK based manufacturing collective. It was an action packed 2-day event at this year’s event. Dominique and Sophie were kept busy on the Fashion Enter stand with a constant stream of production enquiries. While tutor Keeley Smith was on-hand on the Creative Skillset stand to talk about our educational and apprenticeship resources.

Keeley commented: “Meet the Manufacturer and Meet the Trainer was a great event for companies, designers, manufacturers and trainers to network. I was able to meet other training providers within the London region at the Creative Skills set stand, where I had the opportunity to promote apprenticeships and training for The Fashion Technology Academy.”

mtm jenny paulAs Paul Markevicius Senior media representative at FashionCapital concisely added: “I love this event. Small but perfectly formed, oozing goodwill.”

Jenny Holloway CEO of FashionCapital & Fashion Enter said: “It was great to see so many clients and potential new clients at MTM last week.  We were mobbed on the stand and to accommodate so many potential new clients we are opening our doors on Tuesday 16th June from 11am – 1pm to show everyone how we work and to meet the team.  If you would also like to attend please email jenni@fashioncapital.co.uk

New! Machine Engineering Course

production smallWhilst the ongoing rise in British manufacturing is great news for the economy it can’t go unnoticed that there is a shortage of skilled workers here in the UK. The maintenance and quality checks for industrial sewing machines such as an over locker, felling and cover stitch machine is a niche trade that unless the next generation is trained in will soon be diminished. This is exactly why we are offering two courses in Industrial Apparel Machine Maintenance where learners will be taught how to identify tool and components for a range of industry machines.

Level 1 is a six week accredited course teaching the routine maintenance and quality checking of a flat bed, candidates receiving job seekers allowance or working less than 16 hours a week are eligible to take this course for free. This could then potentially lead onto the Level 3 apprenticeship programme where the learner is placed with an employer across the 24 month course; they spend four days a week in the working environment and then spend one day a week being trained in machine maintenance at the Fashion Technology Academy in order to achieve the Level 3 qualification.

There will be an Open Day at The Fashion Technology Academy on 9th July from 10am – 14.00 to review the new courses.

To register your interest in the Machine Engineering course and to attend the Open Day please email education@fashioncapital.co.uk

C.NICOL Launches ‘Water Sirens’

 10 june c nicol launch

Fusing sumptuously soft materials, rich colour contrasts and an unusual texturized twist, C.NICOL has launched its first collection this week.

Founded by Scottish designer, Cathleen Nicol, the new handbag and accessories range combines clean, functional lines, with soft-cow hide, and contrasting Scottish-salmon skin leather. Each of the leathers appears in complimentary but distinctive colour varieties, including mauve and lavender; emerald and lime; tan and cream.

“Handbags have always been an obsession for me but I found myself dissatisfied with what I was buying and began drawing ideas for what my “ideal handbag” would look like,” comments Nicol.

With a 10-year career working in public relations, events and marketing, Nicol constantly sought handbags that could be used functionally, but with style and elegance, and something that little bit different.

“Being Scottish, having a British brand was really key for me as a designer. My heritage is in Britain and I think it is important for any designer that their personality is reflected in what they create,” says Nicol.

For this reason, the materials Nicol uses to create her first collection are all sourced from the UK, with British cow-hide, Scottish salmon, and a factory in London bringing all the designs together.

In addition to the exterior craftsmanship, each bag will be lined with specially designed print, with this collection’s design featuring beautifully detailed illustrations of mermaids in line with the ‘Water Sirens’ theme. Each collection will see a British or international artist provide artwork for the bags’ interiors.

Thank-you to Sharon Thomas of Waltham Forest College

‪Jenny Holloway is completing her DTLLS level 5 course so she will be a qualified teacher by end July.  Jenny commented: “I have absolute respect for the teaching profession. I went into this two-year qualification thinking it was going to be easy because I am often holding seminars and talks. How wrong was I.  I can’t believe how many theories and teaching strategies there are! It’s completely been a deep and rich learning experience and a huge thank you to Sharon who has been so supportive and patient!”

This Week on www.fashioncapital.co.uk…Best Graduate Fashion Week 2015 collage

Our design talent in the UK is second to none and this latest story confirms it with Josh Read from Kingston University landing a top internship with Dior in Paris. Meanwhile Elyse Durr, a fashion student at the University of Derby said she was “overwhelmed” after her womenswear collection was selected by a top Prada designer for an award. And our trend guru Katie Farley picks her top three collections from this year’s graduate shows. And just to mention that this week the team will be reporting directly from London Collections: Men – see you there!

To coincide with C.Nicol’s new collection launch we have picked out this ‘Fia Neptune’ shoulder bag. It doubles as a cross-body by lengthening the adjustable strap and offers ladylike chic to women who want something more compact than a tote to carry around each day. We love the contrasting leather and gorgeous colour combined with the printed mermaid lining by illustrator, Catherine Houten. Now available online £295.00.

Until next time, have a great week.
