On FashionCapital This Week…
Katie’s Fashion Fairground features key trends in ‘It’ bags this season, meanwhile The Clothes Show Live, recently held at the NEC, have named their ‘Fashion Blogger of the Year’ judged by the one and only Sasha Wilkins of Liberty London Girl. Elsewhere, Covent Garden seems to be having a retail revival, with a boom in openings over the summer months – from Aesop and Opening Ceremony to Dior’s standalone beauty store. Now jewellery retailer Cadenzza is about to join them with a flagship store opening its doors for the first time tomorrow (12th Dec.)
The Factory & Stitching Academy featured in the Financial Times
In a backlash against all the negative publicity regarding the British manufacturing industry the Financial Times featured a ‘Made in Britain’ positive piece referencing The Factory and the Stitching Academy. Here is a small extract from last week’s article by Tanya Powley…
“The key to the UK is flexibility,” says Sophie Glover, head of garment technical services at ASOS. “We are a fast-fashion business and need to be first to market with the latest trends.” It uses its factory in North London, also home of its Stitching Academy, to produce 7,000 units a week.
Margaret Thomas has spent four hours a day for the past six weeks learning how to cut, sew and stitch in a modern North London factory. The 27-year-old proudly says she can now make a dress from scratch.
“I’ve got a sewing machine sitting at home and all I’ve ever wanted to do is learn how to make clothes,” says Ms Thomas, who lives nearby in Southgate.
She is one of 120 people who will be trained in stitching skills over the coming year as part of the ASOS Stitching Academy, launched by the online retailer in July to play its part in tackling one of the biggest problems holding back a resurgence in UK textile manufacturing: a skills shortage.
