Fabrics course available at The Fashion Technology Academy
Understanding fabrics is an absolute must for any career path in the fashion industry. If you can use the right terminology and a have a good knowledge of how fabrics are developed, their end uses and what to look for when sourcing this in turn will help you to negotiate better deals with your suppliers, source more appropriate fabrics for your designs and understand the production process with your manufacturer.
This six week course teaches you the fundamentals of fabrics: how to identify the construction and characteristics of man-made and natural fabrics. You will observe the lay planning process and complete a manual lay.
Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles, 12 credits minimum
Fabric Inspection, 4 credits
You will be taught about fabric qualities and faults.This includes knowledge of the properties of natural and man-made fabrics, and what are common fabric faults and solutions.
Fabric Laying, 4 credits
You will be taught a basic understanding of fabric laying. This includes: identifying a range of woven and knitted fabrics; how to describe the lay planning process; choose the correct lay plans and how to perform a manual lay.
Principles of Fabric Cutting, 4 credits
You will be taught a basic understanding of fabric cutting. This includes how to identify the correct cutting tools for a range of fabrics and to recognise the correct lay plan; fabric and components for a garment specification. This unit also introduces relaxing of the fabric.
