Fashion Forward is the newest catwalk designer sponsorship initiative by the British Fashion Council. It rewards London’s rising stars, whose businesses have surpassed New Generation sponsorship, with financial support to show and develop their businesses in London. This season’s winners are Sinha-Stanic, Richard Nicoll and Jens Laugesen. They were chosen by a panel of press and buyers, the British Fashion Council’s CEO Hilary Riva and the Fashion Forward’s sponsor Westfield London.
Announced around the stylish swimming pool of London’s newest and hip Haymarket hotel, the winners received applause from fashion’s elite which bodes well for the designers’ September shows. Models Agyness Deyn, Liberty Ross and Jasmine Guinness were there to support, as was previous Fashion Forward winner Giles Deacon who showcased his lesser known DJing talent to create a buoyant atmosphere supported by another rising London star – Henry Holland – it felt as if London Fashion Week had started already.
Sinha-Stanic’s sponsorship is now in its second consecutive season. Designers Fiona Sinha and Aleksander Stanic received much acclaim since their catwalk debut in 2004 and are known for their beautifully cut garments with easy sophistication that is entirely modern and relaxed. Fiona Sinha wore one of her own designs to receive the award, a long, feminine silhouette – a small insight into the direction of their Spring/Summer collection we were told.
Richard Nicoll and Jens Laugesen both received the sponsorship for the first time.
Richard’s Central Saint Martins MA final year collection was snapped up by Dolce & Gabbana and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune named him ‘King of shirts’. His collection combines menswear fabrics with corsetry and couture detailing, creating strong sculptured garments.
Jens describes his collection as a ‘Hybrid reconstruction’ of generic garments. Jens is currently teaching Fashion on the Central Saint Martins MA course and has designed capsule collections for TopShop.
All three designer businesses are popular, driven, determined to grow and deliver British fashion to an international stage. They are must-sees on London’s schedule which is due to be released next week.
