New Look – Meet Our Apprentices

06-03-2014

new_lookThis week is National Apprenticeship Week and we’d like you to meet our 4 apprentices: Lily, Louisa, Iga and Emma who have been spending time with Sof in the Quality team.

First of all we caught up with Head of Quality, Sof Sofocleous to find out the benefits of getting involved in an apprenticeship scheme…

Why did you decide to take part in the Apprenticeship scheme?

There is a BIG gap in the market for good garment and footwear technologists, also there are many young people who can’t get a job and build a career so it seemed the obvious thing to do. I’m very pleased and proud on how it has all worked out.

How have your team supported the development of the Apprentices?

My team found it a bit daunting at first, but like everything in life you tend to reap the rewards when you put in the effort in. My team put in a lot of time to the apprentices development. At first things do take longer because you’re showing someone the ropes, but the team saw the benefits very early on which gave them a sense of achievement.

What have the benefits been to New Look?

We were missing the entry level layer in the Quality Team structure, having four apprentices in the team enabled the more experienced techs to get more involved in the detail of their product, it also gave some of them the opportunity to ‘people manage’ for the first time.
