As a part of their project insight into the fashion industry the group constructed their own customised garments on industrial machines in a sector specific programme that aims to provide them with employment opportunities within the industry.

Previous to this the group assisted designer Natasha Zinko at London Fashion Week as well as attending a catwalk show by Barbara Casasola, along with a range of presentations and talks by leading industry professionals. This inspiration was then channeled into making a range of one-off garments from tops, tee’s to dresses and tanks.

Here’s what some of the project participants had to say:

“I have learnt a lot of different sewing techniques & I have improved my sewing skills here & I have enjoyed working with Marilyn & Layla, I’ve had fun whilst learning & I wish I could stay for longer.” – Charon Lucas

“Great experience from pattern cutting to operating a sewing machine. Up-close guidance and lovely atmosphere to work in. Thank you Leyla, Melissa and Marilyn.” – Cyrus Wayne

“I’ve really enjoyed this project it has taught me a lot of new stuff like creating garments, sorting out different type of materials, putting fabrics together to design a t-shirt. My t-shirt came out great I think, thanks to the help of Layla, Marilyn and Melissa thank you all for the experience.” – Kadeem

“I have really enjoyed myself on this course. I have picked up skills on pattern cutting, taking accurate measurements, overlocking and using the industrial machine in such a short space of time. I am grateful for meeting Layla and Marilyn, they both have been very helpful and encouraging and this has been a great opportunity and experience.” – Genevieve El-bazar

“I have really enjoyed my time at the Fashion Technology Academy and I really looked forward to how my garment turned out. I have really appreciated the help and support I’ve had during the making process.” – Cora Griffiths

“I really enjoyed this part of our course. Producing a t-shirt using new techniques and getting to embellish it however I want is really fun and I was excited to see the end product.” – Ellie Wilmer

The project culminated with the 12 talented participants showcasing their finished garments at the Creativity Works Breakfast at City Hall.

In London, 1 in 8 of all jobs are within the creative industries. Creativity Works aims to develop specific skills and ‘on the job’ experiences for young Londoners and provide them with job and training opportunities in the creative industries.
