Job Description

A fashion editor oversees the creation, development and presentation of content for a fashion publication (magazine, newspaper, journal etc), photo shoots, websites and TV shows. The job is similar to that of an editor in any other medium, but instead you primarily deal with fashion content.  As a Fashion editor you will work under an editor-in-chief, you will then both decide what creative matter you want in your publication. You may also specialize in apparel, accessories, make-up, hair etc.  As a fashion editor you can work on a contractual basis or full-time. The primary responsibility is to make sure that the text provided by the fashion writers is contextually suitable. The content is usually determined by the latest trends, season and previous issues.

There are a number of different, media/journalism related degrees or courses you can take in order to get yourself up the ladder. You must have an extensive and varied amount of experience behind you, usually achieved after years of working in the industry. To kick start you career it is best to obtain an internship within a publication, and work your way to the top. Motivation and determination is key, if you wish to get this position.

Opportunities

As a fashion editor you will get the chance to travel to various parts of the world, assist on photo shoots meet with various celebrities and be given a range of free samples. Most fashion editors, remain editors they may just switch company or work there way to Editor-In-Chief. The average salary for a fashion editor in the UK is £26,710.
