Summer Uni at Barking 2012

29-08-2012

Over the last 4 years we have succesfully delivered a fashion workshop which has always been a favourite in the borough which has lead to students signing up a year ahead and participating again each year.

This year we decided to introduce “The Fashion Academy of Arts” where we covered the Fashion World along with additional areas such as Jewellry Design and creation workshops and Modelling Workshops where we covere confidence building and the highs and lows of fashion.
As it was the Olympic season we also Joined forces with Inspire your life 2 and delivered Zumbathon which was a combination of Zumba and an additional spot Cheerleading which was the last part of the Academy of Arts.
Each workshop ended with a finale.
Fashion Academy of Arts: Fashion Show
Celeb Photography: Live Photo Shoot in the Park
Zumbathon: Live Performance which was a fusion of Zumba and Cheerleading
We even had a birthday which we celebrated for one of the students so we had to have a cake and candles to celebrate as it was rude not too.
Each workshop had positive feedback from students and parents which lead to the request of after school clubs which is our plan for the future. Once students are over 16 and if they are interested in furthering their career in fashion we can offer them an apprenticeship which we deliver at our Fashion Studio based at The University of East London. Shanice Godwin-Samuel was one of our shining stars who particpated last year and is now doing fantastically well
.
One of the parents comments:
“Thank you for finding the energy and making the time in your busy schedule to host the girls over this fortnight. I had a look through your website and I can see that you are extremely busy, so I am delighted  to see that you make time to pass on your talents to the young, they really need more positive role models like yourself; its a positive contribution that you and your organisation are making to the children’s lives in the borough”

We would like to Vicarage Field Shopping Centre Management, Cafe Alive, Disability Information and Resource Centre (D.I.R.C), Amanda Sutcliffe, Micheala From London Modelling Academy (LMA), Nicola (Celebrity Make Up Artist), Denise Brown (Stylist for Rhianna), Arron Dunworth (Celebrity Photographer & Tutor), Carla from Inspire Your life 2, Rebecca Primus and all of the Students who participated and the Fashion Enter Staff for making this all possible along with Summer Sorted team in Barking and Dagenham.
Syreeta McQueen (Fashion-enter Boutique Manager and Summer School Co-ordinator) commented:
‘Barking and Dagenham are currently the only borough who delivers such a range of activities for the Young Ones during the holiday and it is wonderul to see the smile on their faces especially the parents as their children have something of substance to participate in during the holidays. Fun whilst learning is the ideal balance and very encouraging for the young ones. We also cover The retail world, confidence building and life skills enhancements. So they leave us with skills they can use in their future plus an acheivement. This year we were lucky to have had visitors from Nicola; Singer Rita Ora’s Make up artist and Denise; Rhianna, Usher Kanye Wests Stylist. Our Celebrity Photogrpaher showed the students how the photogrpahy world is and taught them how to take photo’s and changes that are made in the industry today which the students wasnt aware of. “more than meets the eye” is what i called it and this helped to tackle the stereotypes that the students had fixated in their minds. We also had a lady who currenty makes jewellry for Dorothy Perkins and the Arcadia group go through Jewellry design and weaving techniques and each student designed a created a jewellry collection; one of the days were so lovely we spent the day in the park weaving. This was just a small part of what we covered and we hope to cover more in the future and give students a chance to have a taste of all areas in the fashion world.’
