Fashion Design BA (Hons)
The Course
The creative and practical nature of the course is designed to help students acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to express their individuality and to recognise their career potential. Each year students have the opportunity to undertake ‘live’ sponsored projects and every year we stage a full-scale show where students can experience what it is like to show their work in a professional environment, as well as having a great time!
Our aim is to nurture the students’ creativity by developing skills and confidence in dealing with ideas, materials and processes. In addition, students are encouraged to become aware of the issues and debates surrounding the industry such as: the ethics of design, the representation of the body, the use of new technologies, and so on.
Year 1
Students are introduced to the range of issues and challenges confronted by the contemporary fashion designer and deal with ideas, materials and construction. This is supported by a design theory and contextual studies programme.
Year 2
The course develops a more advanced technical understanding of materials and technologies, while addressing the central issues of design and innovation within fashion design. The theory programme continues to develop an understanding of the context of design practice while allowing an increasing specialisation and focus on particular interests.
Year 3
Through consultation, students are given the freedom to develop an individual programme of study that contextualises personal design aspirations. A broad cultural perspective on contemporary issues and professional practice is encouraged and supported through the production of a dissertation that will establish a strong creative identity throughout the body of innovative fashion design work.
Career Prospects
Our graduates are qualified to work in a number of fashion related sectors including: commercial design, design management, fashion styling, retail buying and fashion journalism or to pursue further academic study at postgraduate level. Many of our students have been successful in gaining work experience and employment with national and international designers, retailers, and media organisations.
