Liverpool John Moores University

Fashion & Textile Design BA (Hons)

Introduction

Cultural diversity is a feature of life in Liverpool. Imagery and inspiration plucked from all over the globe jostle for attention in the work of the students on the Fashion and Textile Design degree route. Canines and crinolines, bondage and brocade, feathers and flowers, are a few of the many and diverse influences used by the students of this highly individual course. Liverpool’s house style is pure energy, diversity and originality. Ideas flow freely in the creative city that has so many connections with artists, musicians and poets. The Liverpool course encourages this individualism and energy, polishing and adding professional know-how to the final product

Course content

This programme at Liverpool is diverse, free-ranging, broad in scope and allows a large degree of individual expression and creativity. It differs from many other courses because of its broad parameters. The route has a particular identity, which is most clearly defined in the students it attracts, and people external to it. It is highly creative, has energy, flexibility, breadth and freedom of approach which encourages diversity, individuality and dynamism. It provides a framework inside which students are prepared to enter the fashion/textiles and related industries. Fashion or Textile Design are taught as disciplines underpinned by the methodology of their design processes. This involves problem identification, exploration, research and information gathering in a divergent way, examination of design constraints leading to a synthesis and design solution. The course provides a framework for an intellectually searching and demanding educational experience while raising visual awareness, critical faculties and aesthetic sensibilities. Technical skills are taught under the major headings of Fashion and Textiles. Students are encouraged to work across the skill areas as the demands of their work dictate, taking maximum advantage of the interchange of ideas across the areas of the courses and the Art School.
