Leading representatives of the design industries met at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 19 May for the inaugural meeting of the Faculty of Design Industry Advisory Committee.
This was no run-of-the-mill committee meeting. Members took the opportunity to view a diverse range of student work from fashion and textiles to product, furniture and interaction.
Students were on hand to explain their projects, demonstrating to the industry representatives how they could understand and meet challenging real-life briefs with creative solutions.
Course leaders were able to gain information from the industry representatives on latest trends and developments which will help to inform the content of courses in future. All in an informal atmosphere.
Dianne Taylor, Head of the Faculty of Design and Communication said: “The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to enhance the already strong links between the College and the creative industries.
“There are mutual benefits in the initiative. The College gains an insight into the changes and developments in the creative industries and associated technologies so that we can ensure that our courses and technology are focused on the industries’ requirements.
“The industry representatives have the opportunity to see the creative talent shortly to be available in the marketplace and to influence future teaching and learning. And – most of all – students are given a great opportunity to showcase their work as a springboard for their future careers.â€
Included in the work on show to the Committee Members was that of students who are participating in the Young Designer of the Year Awards run by the Audi Design Foundation.
The challenge was to develop creative solutions to some of the daily issues faced by people living in one of the most deprived townships in
