Social Business Trust ‘Young Advisors’

10-12-2013

Greater provision of a service that provides insight on young people’s views and needs, and then generates social action projects with the income, will now be possible thanks to an investment of £375,000 by Social Business Trust in a charity called Young Advisors. The support will include both professional help from SBT’s partners and a financial boost.

By providing direct insight from young people, Young Advisors helps organisations and policy makers make evidence-based decisions when offering something new for young people. Profits from the sale of this service are then ploughed into social action projects in the local neighbourhood. Social Business Trust is investing in this ground-breaking organisation to help Young Advisors grow and have greater impact.

With a 120 days of professional support and a cash injection of £15,000 from Social Business Trust and its partners – Bain and Company, British Gas, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, EY, Permira, and Thomson Reuters – Young Advisors will be able to provide more opportunities through their network of national teams.

The Young Advisors themselves are typically between 15 and 21, and are trained to assist policy makers, local authorities, housing associations and others to understand what it’s like to be a young person living and working in their area. They provide services to influential institutions for a fee, and then reinvest profit into social action projects, such as creating a youth centre, providing training to their peers, or improving local green space for the whole community.

“Young Advisors creates a ‘double whammy’ for young people and their communities – they deliver a service providing insights which in itself develops confidence, skills and, therefore, prospects for employment. Then, they have the autonomy to generate social good in their area by tackling issues they spot and have solutions for. We see real scope for significant growth in Young Advisors’ revenues and services and look forward to helping them do so.”

“Our core mission is to make sure young people have greater influence on decisions that affect them. We are excited to join the SBT portfolio and know that our combined efforts will not only create better outcomes for young people, but will also help our organisation in the next stage of growth. I’m very positive about the effect we can have across the country.”
