Two UCA Students Shortlisted in National Tailoring & Design Awards 2014
The awards are arranged by Savile Row Training Academy and aimed at design students and graduates in the UK, with prizes including work placements within the fashion industry, professional photo shoots, £1000 worth of fabrics and £1000 cash.
The brief from Savile Row was to design two outfits with one to have a traditional focus on quality, fit and detailing, whilst the other to be a more conceptual design, encouraging the entrants to be experimental. Both outfits needed to work together as part of a collection but the theme, colour, fabrics and detailing were entirely up to the individual entrants.
BA (Hons) Fashion Design student Zsofia Bakos took her inspiration from car design, using classic clothes and techniques with design innovations, such as carbon-fibre and three-dimensional molding and shaping, creating a streamlined silhouette for suit designs.
“Within the process of car design, traditional shapes are reinvented using technological innovations, and I applied the same idea for tailored garments,” said Zsofia Bakos. “I was particularly enthusiastic to enter the National Tailoring and Design Awards, as it provided an opportunity to compare the strength of my work to other like-minded young designers. I am proud to have my work showcased along the other exceptional submissions that were selected for the finals.”
Fenella Hawker, who graduated from UCA’s BA (Hons) Fashion Design course last year, has also been shortlisted for the Awards. Her designs focused on the silhouette and proportion of the Teddy Boys, a fashion subculture from the 1950s, but contrasted the dark colours and sharp cut designs with lighter fabrics and pleating.
“It is an incredible feeling to have been selected as a finalist for this competition,” said Fenella Hawker (designs pictured below). “Getting through to the final stage has given me the much needed confidence boost in my ability and talent. It confirms that putting in that extra mile does pay off! The prizes are fantastic and will provide a very good head start to my career, both financially, publicity and experience wise so I am looking forward to the final announcement at the end of the month.”
“We’re thrilled that Zsofia and Fenella have both been named as finalists in the National Tailoring & Design Awards,” said Donna Ives, Course Leader of BA (Hons) Fashion Design at University for the Creative Arts. “The awards celebrate promising fashion students’ and graduates’ innovative concepts, and both of our finalist entrants have fought off the tough competition of students and graduates from all over the country, so this is a great success for them.”
Winners will be announced at the end of January, and the finalists’ entries can be viewed at www.savilerowtraining.co.uk
