Summer Love Rains Down Under

05-05-2009

Friends since university, Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston have made waves in their fourth collection show for Spring/Summer 09/10.

Australian fashionistas, celebrities and media gathered beside Sydney Harbour. Red wines fit for the winter – nearly present, were sipped and alternated with white wines of the summer to come.  The merry meet was clear a celebration of Australian fashion.

Black crotchet mid drifts and tube dresses with deep, round necklines provided a crafty compliment against marbled, silk georgette harem pants and tops in summer shades of orange, tangerine and pink.

A military theme overlayed the flower fun: studded, mulberry, charcoal and black suede belts, cut to form a continuous row of diamonds, provided focal points and structure to the aesthetic. Old gold amped the contrast in the form of metallic tassels and exposed zippers, forming full borders of fringes on skirts and vests.

Swimsuits were placed throughout the range. Styled alone and paired. The splash wear sported had scoop neck and back lines, high cut legs and were detailed with horizontal panels.

My favourite was the multicoloured textile mirror – a plane of shining rainbows formed by the colours turquoise, chocolate, cobalt blue, gold, bronze and silver. The pattern swirled over swimsuits and mini dresses like a psychedelic mural on the hood of a 1967 VW Beetle.

Despite all the love and fun described. This range was chick and tough. Tasselled leather wristbands and wrapping, strapping heels that screamed: "Don't mess with me" were prominent. As were unjoined sections of seams, creating intentional peep holes, revealing sections of flesh where if convention was played skin would be covered.
