Harem Pants: Fashion Forward or Frightening?
04-06-2009
Spring/Summer 09 has seen the arrival of the extreme trouser shapes, from peg leg to jodhpurs. None of these styles seem to be that flattering to most figures, not forgetting incredibly tricky to wear. However it is the harem pants that have caught my attention and landed right at the top of my worst offenders list. Not to mention the connotations with MC Hammer, can't say he is the first person who pops into my head when it comes to style!
The harem pants appearance in the west originates from the early 1900's when designer Paul Poiret, inspired by Orientalism incorporated the design into his collections. They were extremely fashion forward then, at a time when women were still in corsets and full length skirts, and I believe are still only for the fashion confident now. Something that should stay on the catwalk perhaps?
Apparently favoured for their comfort factor, I fail to see how something that makes you look as if you are wearing a rather large and sagging nappy is appealing, even if it is great for lounging about in. The baggy bottom seems to just make them such an unflattering trouser and creating emphasis on the hips is something not that many want. Despite the debate on the harem pant, the high street has plenty on offer from tailored versions to more slouchy relaxed styles so you can wear it how you choose and within your budget.
I can see that, yes, done right it can make a change from the usual trousers available, especially when it comes to smart tailoring. The key to this trouser silhouette is to keep it simple and tailored, and staying away from those pants that have a very baggy bottom. The key focus is the shape and trying to add too much detail can make it look disastrous! I think the best designs are those that are cropped just below the knee, and slightly more tailored and teamed with a simple top, a vest or shirt for example.
I think it is something that you need to get absolutely spot on to look great, otherwise it can be such a bad look. Pass me my skinnies, I'm staying on the fence with this one until I'm persuaded otherwise!
