GFW Student Trend Report
12-06-2009
At graduate fashion Week, amazing creations are not restricted to the catwalk. As Fashion Capital's student insider, I went off to explore what the graduates and their studenty chums were wearing for the highlight of the student fashion calendar. Once again I was bowled over by the bizarre and the brilliant, no one was boring at Earls Court this week! My fabulous outfit of the week goes to a very brave fella who was rocking jeans, a pink swimsuit and a balaclava, but he disappeared into the crowd before I could grab him so you will just have to believe me!
Aside from the must have accessory, the Skinny Cow ice-creams which were being given out left right and centre to keep fashionista energy levels up it was print which ruled at Graduate Fashion Week. Everything from animal to floral and everything in between made for a very colourful week. I loved how people were taking print to the legs, leggings, tights, jeans, skirts… as long as it's bright it was all fair game. Floral tights seem to be super popular, teamed with denim and leather they can give a flirty touch to an edgy outfit. It was interesting to see new takes on leggings and tights, block colours worn under short jeans to give a colour injection at the ankle or even lace tights pulled up and teamed with a crop top. Make your prints clash for fashion kudos.
When it came to shoes a lot of girls took the sensible approach and donned their flats but that is not to say they weren't fabulous. Gladiator sandals seemed to breed like rabbits at GFW, but even with a massive trend like this there was still a lot of room for individuality. Whether you choose studs, knee high, plastic, leather, colour, metallic, be sure that you get yourself a pair of these babies! If the weather turns, as it did on Tuesday don't be caught out with your toes exposed! Opt for brogues, another massive trend at GFW. Again there is room for experimentation here, brave those heels or choose an interesting colour combination to stamp your mark. I would also like to report that the jelly shoe of your youth is firmly back in fashions radar. Anything from the Vivienne Westwood plastic jelly heels to straight up beach front jobbies score top points!
Accessories are big news in these student style friendly recession times, I'm all about using cool individual accessories to funk up an outfit and so it seems were the GFW crew! Everything from massive gold chains, strings of peals and huge pendants to flowers and enormous bows in the hair. As long as it was over stated and eye catching it was in, no room for subtlety here! I loved it!
