Retro Revival
29-05-2012
A prime example of the revival is wild prints on leggings, now seen everywhere from high street to designer. For instance Sassa Jimenez’s Spring/Summer collection of 2010, shows garments with extreme proportions such as oversized shoulders – an iconic Eighties trait, Peplums and body skimming shapes, she explains that “I chose some famous fashion silhouettes from that period and incorporated it into my pieces” and she has clearly refined her collection down to simply and elegantly including the beautiful elements of fashion from that era, rather than gaudy, neon printed bomber jackets!
On the high street however, in contrast to the elegance of Jimenez’s collection, fluorescent colours and bold, arty prints are evidently all the range.
Shops like Zara for example are taking Eighties revival to the extreme in their TRF collection, boasting Hawaiian print bomber jackets, over-dyed and bleached denim and high colour, fluorescent garments.
Personally I love a dose of Vintage, especially come Winter, an oversized knitted jumper and a pair of printed leggings either available on the high street or I find its always worthwhile scanning your local vintage or charity shops, for some bargain vintage right on your doorstep.
Another way of getting your hands on some vintage would be raiding your Mum’s or even Grandparents wardrobes for pieces that were fashionable in that era and have circled back round over the last 20 years to becoming highly fashionable again.

Overall what that I love most about Eighties fashion is the element of fun brought about it; if you wanted to wear earrings so big they weighed down your head, you could.
You could completely miss-match colours, prints and textures that shouldn’t work together and completely get away with it. And above all, the wackier, the better, I don’t think there are many trends nowadays that you can say that about other than Eighties revival.
