The Evolution of Student Fashion
30-09-2013
This seems to be especially important to young people and students whom have always created a fashion all of their own that has branched out
from campuses and changed how other people dress. When many people consider the evolution of student life, they often think of the technology and the standard of education, they tend to forget that fashion and self-expression has seen many dramatic changes that have marked each era in its own way.
If you look at the inte
ractive mini-site from Endsleigh, you can really see how fashion and students have had quite a journey to get to where we are today. Not to mention that the very appearance of students themselves has changed significantly too. If you glance over Endsleigh’s depiction of the 1980s, you can see that it was very young and carefree. Neon colours and glitter was almost an intrinsic part of how to accessorise and dress, it’s very flamboyant and eye catching to capture the New Romantic scene that had developed from the punk movement.

This, at first, might sound a little contradictory, but when you consider that students aren’t just the younger generation anymore but there are mature students as well, it’s easy to see how the fashion has evolved to accommodate the diversity that campuses now display.
Furthermore, the way people view university is changing, which in turn is altering how people dress for it. In earlier decades, university was seen as just as much a social experience as an educational one, and therefore people were a lot more relaxed, outgoing and somewhat experimental/boho with their styles. As shown in the 2000s, however, university is now being seen for its academic attributes more than the social element (although the social side is obviously still there).
Therefore, students are dressing to reflect that. They’re still expressing themselves and their personalities, but are doing in a way that resonates with the type of careers they want to strive for when they leave. Furthermore, the 2010s fashion in itself, regardless of whether it’s aimed at students or not, has become very high-fashion and tailored. In fact, it would be fair to say that smart/ casual is the staple aim of most fashion followers, it’s almost business attire with a twist.
Where does that leave the future of student fashion, and what will the 2020s hold for the fashion forward students of the next generation? From what we’ve seen throughout the previous decades, there will no doubt be a recycling of what is and isn’t acceptable to the fashion-conscious.
It will be as much of what we see today, reinvented and restyled to accommodate the modern-day edge.
