Trend Details From The Autumn/Winter Catwalks 2004/05

28-04-2004

Equestrian Lines Next Autumn’s knee-high boots borrow from a range of riders, from equestrian to military to biker. Making a prominent appearance at the womenswear collections were a selection of glossy black riding boots: Jasper Conran, Boudicca, Sophia Kokosalaki, Hermes and Sass & Bide all advocated the look and continued the equestrian feel in some of their garments; look out for tweed jodhpurs, fitted riding jackets and leather gloves. Over in the menswear camp military boots made the rounds once again, while ankle boots in biker and hiking styles – Vivienne Westwood, D-Squared & Andrew McKenzie will no doubt prove more viable.

Mrs T Bar Complementing the ladylike look that’s all pencil skirts and pussy-bow blouses is the round-toed T-bar. Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Betty Jackson incorporated T-bar shoes and sandals into their collections for a very elegant and grown-up look. Elsewhere, there were classic court heels, platforms, wedge heels and strappy high-heeled sandals. While some were styled with tights many went the bare leg route, which perhaps isn’t the most practical option for those autumn/winter months.

Animal Instincts Along with ladylike chic comes the re-emergence of classic and luxurious accessories. Crocodile and alligator skin look popular once again in the shoe and bag department and not just for the ladies, the menswear collections were also awash with crocodile skin weekend bags and travel holdalls – Gucci, Hermes, and Kenneth Cole. As quality and super-lux becomes paramount the use of fur on the designer catwalks has also become more widespread. Fur trims, coats, stoles and wraps could be seen from Versace to Clements Ribeiro. For the boys D-Squared, Roberto Cavalli and Yves Saint Laurent offered more in the way of fur, while leather and sheepskin also regularly appeared on the international catwalks.

Vintage Layers Moving away from ladylike is the eclectic trend of layering up in various retro inspired pieces. Capes, shawls, scarves and ponchos provide the outer layers in a variety of guises while the decades collide with a mismatch approach to dressing. D&G combined dressy 1920’s pieces with 1990’s hoodies, Michael Kors mixed up sassy glamour with 1970’s detailing and Luella Bartley merged Edwardian with the 1970’s and a touch of biker chic.
