Denim
Jeans are never far from fashion’s radar as denim continues to re-invent itself on the streets.
Jeans span a range of silhouettes from narrow cuts to wide-legged styles. Super-skinny drainpipe silhouettes have been around for a couple of seasons now, but winter’s hot styling option of wearing jeans tucked into boots has been replaced by teaming with flat shoes or pumps, emphasising extreme ankle widths. Best for youth-markets, super-skinny styles come in stretch denim and should be worn with caution, as this style is flattering only on svelte proportions.
A more forgiving, and also more directional look is denim culottes. Extremely wide silhouettes look fresh in comparison to narrow silhouettes. Mid-calf lengths worn with boots are hot, while curved hems and contrast seams prove key styling details.
More regular straight-leg jean silhouettes are cut to above the ankle and feature tab, cuff and button detailing. Watch out for paper-bag waist detailing adding an eighties twist to regular fit jeans for autumn/winter 05/06.
Seasonal must-have shorts are hot in denim in faded and distressed washes. Just below knee-length proportions are key, while shorter rolled-up styles are on course to become an essential wardrobe addition as the weather hots up. Wear with boots and tights until then.
