Everybody’s Talking About…Gareth Pugh

{mosimage}Let’s face it – we all love a bit of visual drama. And new boy on the block – Gareth Pugh certainly provides it. Last February he showed for the first time under the Fashion East umbrella and amazed the audience with his highly imaginative over-sized designs. Exploring the space around the body as opposed to the body itself, Pugh’s dramatic capes and hoods borrowed from Pied Piper references, while slinky catsuits, pom-poms, fur and human hair were some of the additional elements thrown into the mix. Dazed & Confused sat up and took note after his Central Saint Martin’s graduate collection and featured his massive balloon outfit on their cover earlier in the year. Elsewhere, Lee Carter, Editor-in-Chief at Hintmag.com said of the young designer: “Gareth Pugh is a star-in-the-making. We knew it even from only one collection so far. We’ll be tailing him for years to come.” News just in…Fashion East has announced that they will be presenting Pugh’s collection for a second season, roll on September.

Fashion East’s Chosen 3

So along with Gareth Pugh who else will be showing at the Fashion East event this September?

Pugh will be joined by newcomers: Spijkers En Spijkers and Marios Schwab.

Spijkers en Spijkers are a twin sister design duo. The pair began their eponymous label in 2000 after completing their MA in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute, Arnhem. Already stocked in the UK, Spain, Denmark, Japan and the US, Spijkers en Spijkers have become known for their modernist slant on past fashions with a dash of functionality.

Marios Schwab, meanwhile, is a London based Saint Martin’s 2003 grad. Since leaving college he has gone on to work for Kim Jones and regularly collaborates with fashion stylist Tal Brener for magazines such as Dazed & Confused and i-D. Schwab describes his womenswear creations as avant guard and yet extremely sexy.

American Apparel in Sunny Shoreditch

{mosimage}Fair trade brand American Apparel opened its Shoreditch doors for the very first time last night (Thurs 25th). Offering beer, pole dancers and discounts it certainly wasn’t a quiet introduction for the LA based clothing company. The new store is the second American Apparel to open on London soil, with the first over in Carnaby Street, W1.
