Street Trends [As good as new] – by Jo Carey

Fashion never seems to tire of vintage looks. With retro clothes always a style staple on the street, the vogue for vintage styling adopted by designers for autumn/winter 05/06 is not necessarily a case of the catwalks having got there first.
Although the 50’s has been a key era to plunder for inspiration in recent months with full skirts, hair-bands, pumps and polka-dots all impacting on the street, next season, the emphasis moves to incorporate other eras such as the 60’s, 70’s, 40’s and even earlier Edwardian and Victorian references.
80’s styling is still evident on the street, having been a key style reference point for a few seasons now, with leggings, dropped waistlines and plastic clasp belts producing youthful, quirky effects. String of pearls have been proving a key accessory for many months, perfectly lending a vintage 50’s or 60’s touch to an outfit, depending on the length of strands and the style of wearing. Floppy 70’s style hats work well as a summer look, but can carry through to autumn/winter for a boho touch teamed with 70’s-style prints and crochet. Going forward, Edwardian-style lace blouses layered with woollen tank tops and denim creates a contemporary-vintage feel perfectly.
With flowing silhouettes and floral prints, bold monochrome colour-ways and clean lines, not to mention all manner of print options such as checks, stripes and graphic shapes all referencing past eras, the choice of style inspiration is endless. Just be sure to add your own inspiration and style ideas to the mix.
