The Carlu, reputedly the finest surviving examples of the Art Moderne style anywhere in the world re-opened its doors May 1, 2003 after having been meticulously restored to its original splendour.   Designed by famed French architect Jacques Carlu, noted for his design of the Ille de France and Normandie Ocean Liners, The Carlu exemplifies the grandeur and simplicity that this style was defined by.

 

 

Originally opened by Lady Eaton in 1931, this floor was the epicenter of Canada’s social and cultural worlds.  Its Concert Hall, recognized for its superb acoustics, played host to such notable performers as Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington and Canada’s own Glenn Gould who claimed that its sound was the best in North America.  Already since re-opening, Diana Kroll and Diana Reeves have graced The Carlu’s stage.

 

The Round Room, once considered the place for Toronto Society to dine, is noted for its domed ceiling and central fountain designed by Carlu using Lalique crystal.   In addition, Carlu’s wife Natacha created the awesome mural that surrounds the room, depicting: life on the water, life on the fields, life in the forest and life in the city.  Again, Toronto’s society has embraced this magnificent room, with the press dubbing it the chicest place in Canada to hold a wedding.

 

 

Being positioned as the premier multi-functional special events facility in Canada, accommodating all sizes and styles of corporate, cultural and social events, The Carlu was chosen for Toronto’s Fashion Week in the Fall of 2003.   Numerous fashion shoots and additional run-way shows followed, in addition to three major film shoots including Ron Howard’s Cinderella Man. 

 

The Carlu was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982, and with its restoration Canada has a rare example of an innovative and internationally important architectural style.
