Toronto Fashion Week – Aviva Babins

19-10-2005

This year Toronto Fashion Week dropped the Toronto from the title and donned itself L’Oreal Fashion Week, A Perfect 10.  Celebrating TFW’s 10th annual fashion week, the show featured 28 prominent Canadian designers.  Aptly chosen, Muzik hosted the affair, creating the perfect atmosphere to uphold the event: an open spaced venue featuring exposed brick walls, pink drop lights behind the swanky bar, sponsor displays, a nail bar sponsored by Fashion magazine, modern furnishings and fittings, a catwalk, a VIP lounge, and of course, the Media Lounge (where I volunteered).

As suggested by the name, L’Oreal was markedly the queen sponsor.  Much to the men’s glee, there were goody bags for both sexes: inside the woman’s canvas carrier bag was mousse, hair gel, mascara, lip gloss, eye shadow, and a L’Oreal press pack; the men’s impressive silver goody bag unearthed the entire mens’ product range and a copy of Jeanne Becker’s new men’s magazine Sir.

From comments heard by random passers by, apparently this was the best catwalk presentation produced by TFW.  The Canadian designers being featured during fashion are the following: Beckerman, Shan, Paul Harding (Monday), Slikman, Jayn Simpson, Bustle for Vespa, Andy-The-Anh, Arthur Mendoca, Common Cloth (Tuesday), David Dixon, Pat McDonagh, Izzy Camilleri, Jason Matlo, Ula Zekowska, On & On Ecolo chic (Wednesday), Jie, Nevik, Denis Gagnon, Morales, Preloved, Mackage, Pink Tartan (Thursday), Zoran Dobric, Fanshawe, Rosa Costanzo, Vawk, Chio, and Parasuco (Friday).

Highlights from Day 1:

  1. BECKERMAN: 3 sisters, tons of talent, spring/summer collection entitled The Diary of a Dali Girl.  Inventive, great styling, and fun use of knitwear/pom-poms.  My favourite design was the black and white finale knit dress.

  1. SHAN: A Montreal label boasting sexy swimwear and intimates for both men and women.  The models were hot, the range was glamorous, and the pieces wearable – even without committing yourself to a gym membership!

  1. PAUL HARDY: Soft feminine and sophisticated clothing, mixing a colour palette of pastels and neutrals.  The silhouette was airy and the styling absolutely beautiful.  A real pleasure to watch coming down the runway.
