Creative pattern course by an expert!

21-10-2005

So many times we have received calls asking for our advice on what is the best pattern making course in London. We did the normal acknowledgment of a variety of FE and HE institutions however we can now, with hand on heart, say that we have discovered the ultimate course.

“Cutting It – The Expert’s Way” is now up and running and when you have attendees from House of Fraser confirming we are confident that our accreditation of the course is 100% right for the industry.

The course has been spearheaded by an innovative industrialist Mel Everitt who has worked in the clothing and textiles industry for almost 25 years. Mel has continuously worked on making patterns and grading patterns for suppliers to the high street retailers such as Caesar Fashions (main suppliers to Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Hennes to name a few), O1 (supplied Jane Norman, Vestry and Snob) and so the list goes on.

I am a big believer in a pragmatic approach to business. Designers today, with greater pressure on their cashflow than ever before, need to be self reliant. Contrary to popular belief they have to be the master in all trades not the “jack”  and that’s why learning how to make commercial patterns that are right first time and ready to be used in a factory is key for success.

Just look at this course outline:-

Week 1             Overview of pattern making which includes history of the art of pattern making, tools of the trade,.

the design process from concept drawing to production ready, pattern lays and fabric consumption.

Week 2             Basic pattern blocks – construction basic shapes of trousers, skirts, blouses et al to body measurements.

Week 3             Draft patterns – the use of the block pattern to create individual pattern styles for collections.

Week 4             Elementary Pattern construction – Additional pieces for draft patterns e.g. two piece collars and bagged on cuffs.

Week 5             Pattern Embellishments – trimmings, embroidery, blanket stitching etc

Week 6             Grading

Week 7             Working the right way with Factories – dockets, cutting disputes, fabric problems etc

This course is being run by Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, Walden Road, Chislehurst, Kent, BR7 5SN.

What makes this course so unique is that it is totally interactive and participation by attendees is encouraged at all levels. If there are individual problems arising in your business then worry no more! Mel is on hand to cover practical support, advice and help.
