New Dates for February’s Fashion Week

A while back Style Addict reported on Anna Wintour’s words of wisdom on the matter of boosting London Fashion Week. “If I were Stuart Rose,” she told Style Magazines’ Colin McDowell, “I would go down on bended knee to Rose Marie Bravo (CEO of Burberry) to get Burberry back to London. After all, it is a British firm and its designer, Christopher Bailey, is British. That would help to bring back the right buyers and press.” Speaking highly of Britain’s creative talent she added, “I think what spoils it (LFW) is lack of organisation. If only the British Fashion Council could squeeze it in, as it used to, between the Milan and Paris shows. If we could go to London for just two days — which, actually, I normally do — it would be a huge boost, not only for British fashion, but for all of us.”

LFW

Well it seems the British Fashion Council has taken note with the announcement this week that the event will start later and cross over with the first two days of Milan Fashion Week. The idea is that buyers and press starting their circuit in New York will have four full days to travel across to Europe – stopping off for a piece of the London action along the way. The event will now run from Wednesday February 15th to Sunday February 19th at the Natural History Museum location. Stuart Rose commented: “We consistently deliver a full schedule of internationally established designers and now this move will help us to deliver more international media buyers to give London Fashion Week the recognition it deserves.”

The BBC commented that ‘they were sorry to see them go but after a five series run it might be the right time for a change.’ ‘What Not to Wear’ has turned Susannah and Trinny into household names up and down the country, known for their direct, no-nonsense manner – that in the end always gets a great result. Now On: Fashion Lives

From now until February 7th 2006 the British Library explores the lives behind the post-war fashion industry. The exhibition entitled Fashion Lives – brings together a collection of post-war fashion leaders who played a crucial role in shaping the fashion industry as we know it today. Curated by Alistair O’Neill from the London College of Fashion, the display includes a specially commissioned design by Eley Kishimoto and portraits by photographer Gareth McConnell. Fashion Lives is made up of a selection of oral history interviews from the National Life Story Collection at the British Library’s Sound Archive. Industry professionals ranging from PR’s, tailors, fashion editors, costume designers and boutique owners all give an insight into the craft skills and business techniques of the day. Contemporary practitioners such as Julie Verhoeven, Dai Rees, Shelley Fox and bespoke tailor Timothy Everest carry on the exhibition with their views on how the interviewees continue to influence their work in the here and now.
