Blown away by the Irresistible, Pink Ladies and the Lads
24-11-2005
Yesterday we held another Delivery Day at the Langley Park School for Boys. The seminar this week covered the next steps in the Creative Design Process; the translation of illustrations into patterns. We were ably assisted by the wonderful Mel Everett from Mel’s Pattern Studio who explained the importance of notches (!), how pieces of pattern integrate together similar to a 3D jigsaw puzzle and the tolerances of fit.

A further review of the mood boards then commenced and the teams had the arduous task of beginning to stream line their collections into a minimum of three designs per group. The illustrations were, on the whole, outstanding. Considering this group of 16-18 year olds have no formal training in design the current high standards makes you consider if design talent is genuinely within rather than nurtured. Some of the illustrations are so detailed encompassing delicate trims and intricate design that I really do think that their are budding designers at Langley Boys School waiting to enter the heady world of fashion.
Then, drum rolls, it was time for the certificates of merit for the mood board presentations to date. The awards were segmented into Best Group performance and then there was individual work recognition for a Platinum, Gold and Silver award.

Group winner was The Lads who were:
David Rapper – Edmund Thorn – Antony Botten and Ben Hutchings were handed a certificate.
Individual winners were:
Platinum Emily Garret from Femininity
Gold Grace Gardner from Pink Ladies and
Silver Dulcie Adams from Irresistable
Next week will be interesting.
Each group has to provide three designs that then have to be presented to the rest of the group. Only two designs can be selected for garment make up and this is not going to be an easy task by any imagination! Some individual students have already sketched out an entire collection and each student will have the opportunity to present their collection to the group for votes. At the end of next week there will be two selected designs ready for the factory trip to Julie Anna Designs on 7th December.
Well done Park Langley – who would have thought that such a course could have unfolded such talent and resulted in such a highly productive, and enjoyable, six week course.
