Career change – fancy working in retail?

11-01-2006

Most large firms that are retail based are looking for five GCSE passes at the shop floor level. naturally work experience, personality and good communication skills will also have a large bearing on the success of the candidate but it’s harder to get into retail than most people think…especially for the large chains.

Training is normally  provided in house by the retailer and in some cases there are strong incentive bonus schemes too.

As a rough idea regarding the salary structures please find an overview below:-

General Store Staff            £10,221-£13,370
Sales Assistants               Â£12,006-£14,257
Assistant Manager            £15,000-£34,000
Store Manager                  Â£29,000-£58,000
Area regional Manager       Â£45,000-£65,000
Divisional Sales Director    £60,000-£80,000

Other jobs involved in retail also include Window Display and Merchandise Management. These jobs vary depending on the retailer e.g. GAP has a very corporate image for window dressing and display therefore this job requires little genuine creativity as the plans are set from head office and have to be adhered to. Compare this to H&M where merchandise sells out so quickly that front window displays have to be changed frequently and instore mannequins have to be changed almost daily.

Happy hunting.
