Out of the closet

OUT OF THE CLOSET

…Many people detox after the Christmas period in order to be thin, gorgeous and toxin free for the year ahead, so why not do the same for your wardrobe? Many women across the globe have a wardrobe full of monstrosities which they 1) Bought as an impulse buy and never intend on wearing in public 2) It was in the sale and everyone loves a bargain right? (well not if the offending item is a pair of lime green leggings which were bought to recreate the ’Flash dance’ look, even if it was £3 – you know who you are!) and 3) It was bought back in the 90’s and you’re sure it’ll come back into fashion (leggings, cropped sweaters, bum bags and chaps, never looked good, never will).

Kyrsty Hazell does some wardrobe snooping…

To investigate this further, I have decided to indulge in a spot of voyeurism and have rounded up a few ladies who are willing to let me have sneaky peek in their wardrobes and reveal to me what lies within.

First up, a young lady called Leah Crawley, from the lovely Bromley, Kent. She is 21and has a penchant for all things shiny, glam and embellished…and let’s not mention the shoes! This girl must own about 50 pairs with matching handbags and purses no less.

Leah doesn’t believe in following the latest fashion trends. ‘I like things which are different and that you can’t find mass produced in every high street shop’.  Looking at her wardrobe I could see that she likes a spot of retail therapy especially judging by how many shoes she has, she obviously  considers shopping as a sport not a pastime.

Here are Leah’s tips on how to be stylish, her pet hates, what she loves and thinks every girl should have in their wardrobe and her ultimate fashion faux pas:

She loves:

·      Little black dresses – ‘They are a classic item that every girl should have – great for when you are in a rush getting ready and haven’t got time to conjure up a fabulous outfit!’

·      Unusual pieces – ‘Great for when you fancy something different. I especially love ethnic inspired items and things with a lot of sparkle’

·      Good jewellery- ‘I think that a good piece of jewellery can make an outfit.’

·      High Heels – ‘Being 5ft in height, heels are a must for me, the higher the better!’

Pet hates:

·      Ill fitting dresses – ‘I don’t understand why you would want to wear something that doesn’t fit!’

·      Ankle swingers – ‘They cut off the length of your legs and look as though they have shrunk in the wash’.

·      Tops which are too short – ‘They are unflattering and make the top half of the body look short. The top should always sit past the waste’.

·      Coloured junk jewellery – ‘I hate cheap coloured jewellery, always opt for gold or silver’.

Style tips:

·      Simple is always safe – classic items in the wardrobe are essential and avoid you looking like a fashion victim

·      Short women should stay away from full length coats – stick to cropped jackets as they are not only cute, but emphasise the waist giving your body more length.

·      If your outfit is lacking colour, funk it up with a coloured belt or embellished belt – there are great ones in Accessorize.

BEST BARGAIN:

·      Multi coloured wrap top from Red Herring – ‘It went down from £35 to £5 – such a great bargain and it looks fab too!’
