The X factor of Fashion

06-09-2006

The two men are forming a new company that will have house a central London design studio called 19RM. The new business is currently a closely guarded secret but it is clear that the new company is not just about designing and manufacturing collections.

Last Autumn Mouret fell out with his financial backers Sharai and Andre Meyers which resulted in Mouret literally walking out with threats of legal action being claimed by both parties. The fashion industry went into shock! Mouret was just hitting the international big time and off he trotted leaving sales of £2.6m behind him.

Mouret has always been fabled for his pattern cutting prowess and his attention to detail and the female form. Mouret designed the instantly recognisable Galaxy dress, the most recognisable dress in fashion, that even made Carol Vorderman look decent!

Mouret’s background is one of mixed and humble beginnings.  The son of a butcher, Mouret was born in Lourdes in 1961. He showed his first own-name fashion collection during London Fashion Week in February 1998 and was quickly accepted by a very loyal fan base. His name became synonimus with grace and glamour and a return to the 1950s hour glass figure.

At first glance it looks as though Mouret has sold out to commercialisation. Fuller is currently best known in the music industry with 109 single number one hits being assigned to his management company. Other activities instigated by Fuller include the original Pop Idol concept that was developed by Fuller has generated over $1billion dollars of revenue; the management of the commercial activities of the England soccer team and a management company too.

Does this mass market commercialisation sit comfortably with a niche upmarket product? Some believe that Mouret has sold out for the big bucks that will be on offering others say he really had not choice. Whatever the outcome will be there is now doubt that a new wave of commercial fashion is about to hit the high street
