Young Designer Award 2006
02-11-2006
The annual Young Designer Award 2006 took place on Saturday 28th October at Great Portland Street. Its focus and purpose is to raise the profile of young fashion designers aged between 9 – 25 years old from a wide cross section of backgrounds.
Fashion Enter has long supported the event and was asked to be a judge on the panel to select a winner whose collection would then be showcased at the Enter Boutique in Croydon.
Jennifer Holloway Director said “I admire Joanna Marcella tremendously. Each year she works tirelessly to produce this event without any public funding. Joanna has great tenacity and an abundant supply of energy and we are happy to give her full support this year.”
Hayleigh Amos, Boutique Manageress, was a judge at the event and she did stress that the 15 highly talented entrants certainly gave the judges a difficult task in selecting winners from each category. Hayleigh Amos also commented “I can’t believe the professionalism of the entrants. Some of the designs had immense detail in their illustrations and the subsequent garments. Credit to them all for the hard work they put in to this event”.
The main categories are as follows:
The Young Designers Award is for young people between ages of 9-20 and this year there were three entrants in the 9 – 13 year of age category (the youngest was only 10 years old) and seven entrants in the 14 – 20 years of age category. Each entrant gave a presentation to the panel of judges showing a final garment, mood board and then talked through their individual ideas and inspirations to how they got to their final creation.
“I have to say as a judge I was touched and inspired by each of the entrants as they presented their work. They were all so highly creative and committed. It really is great for young people to have this opportunity available to them as it gives them a positive focus and ambition in life.” Hayleigh expressed.
The Avant-Garde Designer Award is an extension of the Young Designer Award but aimed at designers with design experience, creative talent, or are design students. Each entrant again gave a presentation to the panel of judges and talked through their sketches, storyboard, profile of themselves and their avant-garde garment.
The Winners received awards at a gala event and this year’s winners were…
Young Designer 9 – 13 years:

BRETT MARTINDALE who is just 12 years old and certainly stunned the judges with his multi functional garment that could been worn in several different ways and also his intelligence, knowledge and high level of creatively was outstanding, if not unbelievable. He spoke confidently, knew his subject inside out. This young man I am sure will no doubt grow to become a major designer that will be critically acclaimed.
Young Designer 14 – 20 years:

FIRST PLACE Award went FATMAR COHGEZICI at first sight of this garment, I loved it as it is a true catwalk piece and the styling of the model make up and hair was also spot on and for this outfit to have been created by an 18 years of age she is truly highly talented…!
AND THE SECOND PLACE in this category went to: RUJEE BEGUM at just 18 years of age also created a unique catwalk piece made from recycled fabric. The dress itself was made from her mother’s shopping bag. A truly fantastic concept.

The Avant-Garde Designer Award FIRST PLACE went to BERENIKA RUHRNOSSI. This lady really created a stir and surely a star to be. At first sight, seriously I was wowed; it was theatrical and had an edge, an amazing catwalk piece. She had truly encapsulated all her inspiration which was based around historical period costumes and a theatrical snowstorm theme.
SECOND PLACE went to SAMANTHA MARK who again presented yet another fantastic catwalk piece. The garment itself was based around a simple shirt but she created a unique piece using disjointed darts, excellent tailoring skills and a great mix of materials that showed originality.
Fashion Enter then had the difficult task of selecting a winner to be showcased in Enter Boutique and receive free membership to www.fashion-enter.com
It was hard to select just one winner so we decided to on two as we felt that we could create an amazing themed window in the lead up to Christmas with both so this was awarded to FATMAR COHGEZICI and BERENIKA RUHRNOSSI….Congratulations
