New York New York

08-02-2007

In light of all this debate over Size 0 you might have been expecting to see fuller figured models working those New York catwalks. Not so, to be honest, you’d be hard pushed to spot any difference. The girls were as long limbed and slender as ever. Perhaps an exception would be the Diane von Furstenberg show. Diane, the newly appointed president of the CFDA, after all, is adamant that all models used at the collections portray a picture of health – and her girls did marginally portray that sentiment.

But enough on Size 0, I am sure the British press is poised to cover more column inches on the subject when the shows hit London next week. Back to the stateside shows and who’s been showing what? Despite the big freeze the fashion pack and a variety of celebrity faces turned out in force to check out the very latest in fashion.

This season it seems designers are getting reflective with art and history inspired themes referenced from the likes of Miro and Goya to Art Deco and the late Paul Poiret. (Looks like designers have been spending time in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.) In fact, a Parisian chic mood was evident at many a show. Take the highly influential Marc Jacobs his collection was head-to-toe 70s Parisian tailoring, lean lines with a grown-up elegant feel.

Elsewhere, Temperley combined her winning dresses with fitted tailored jackets, mini high-waisted skirts and wide-legged pants. The inspiration: the Russian emigration to Paris after the Revolution, an eclectic mix of Temperley embellishments meets clean fuss-free lines. Diane von Furstenberg confirmed that Autumn/Winter will be yet another strong season for the dress while her use of block pattern brought an injection of arty playfulness.

Key emerging trends from New York:

Oversized cape cardigans, short tunic dresses, blouson sleeves, thick cashmere knits cowl-necklines, luxed-up sportswear pieces, slimline tailored suits, contrasting textures, patchwork, wide-leg pants, high waistlines, grown-up blouses and opaque tights.

Colours:

Colour wise – it’s another black, grey and neutral laden season with plenty of bright interruptions, particularly electric blue, mustard yellow, burnt orange and muted red.
