Fashion Fad or Fashion Foe

16-04-2007

Known as a ‘fanny pack’ in America, this useful yet unsightly creation is usually only sported by tourists. But with inspirational designers setting the trends and testing the boundaries of fashion, this classic waist pack is set to make a comeback!

New York’s Alice Roi exposed her dynamic and traditional views with an oversized coin purse. Whilst Philip Lim opted for a classic envelop style, elegantly versatile for both sexes to enjoy. Leaving responsibility of the modern twist up to Baby Phat, who transformed the design into a block leather pouch, combined with mobile-phone holder.

Celebrating their passion for the handle free accessory, they jointly illustrate its versatility. Described so often as a faux pas, does the bum bag really stand a chance in the real world?

I took to the infamous Oxford Street to investigate. With an assortment of the best shops on offer I was bound to succeed, wasn’t I? Sadly not, rummaging through the rails of Gap, Mango, Zara, H&M, Next, Urban Outfitters, Accessorize, French Connection and even 80’s inspired Bershka, my search was futile.

Until the delights of TopShop, the flagship store that always prevails in my shopping dilemmas. With an entire floor devoted to accessories offering a vast range of bags, from the stalls of a small designer to the globally adored creations of TopShop. I found joy with a gorgeous washed leather pouch in a choice of tan brown or smoked grey. At a reasonable price of £35 it’s a must-have for the summer! No doubt imitators are soon to follow.
