Amelia’s Fashion Diary: July
30-06-2007
A few weeks ago I was at the latest FCUK press day and now I am delivering parcels to the magazines I one day hope to work for, oh how times change, but speak to anyone and they will tell you the only way into fashion is through hard work experience and trust me I have spoken to top people.
To find out what the flipside of the stiletto is like I chose to take a month placement in the marketing department of a luxury leather company on Bond Street but after my first few weeks my sceptical side is kicking in.
PR to me has always been a rather extravagant word for selling, you achieve sales through media coverage, and often the more media coverage you receive the more sales you have. Think the famous Yves Saint Laurent Tribute shoes without the press coverage would you have wanted a pair or even heard of them? Exactly!
So begins the journey of being over polite to any journalist who happens to ring to request a sample for fear of not gaining press coverage and sending out numerous gifts in the hope of enticing them that little bit more.
Then there are the press clipping folders which must be kept up to date at all times, I am sure the guy in the newsagents believes I am single-handedly contributing the diminishing rainforests with the amount of magazines and newspapers I am sent out to buy each day, but without proving the coverage the PR team gain heads could roll, however, at least being on Bond Street the view is just the thing to keep your fuel for passion flowing.
My current obsession is the Dolce and Gabbana window display in which sits a perfect pair of patent wedges touched by Stefano himself while over here in the UK last week. They’re are just the right height for me to feel sexy and still keep my balance with delivering packages, the matching bag with gold D&G pendant would have been perfect on my futuristic fashion shoot last month.
Here I was transformed into a blonde, blue-eyed doll-like creature and for once my pale skinned worked as an advantage emphasising the striking make-up and next seasons most sought after colour – black. But before we start investing in a staple winter wardrobe we need to make the most of the summer sales.
Unlike most years in which impulse buying and the stiletto stampede is prominent I am going to shop wisely and buy more classically reduced pieces, such as plain block coloured maxi dresses which can be transformed with the use of accessories, or a pair of scissors for varying lengths once the summer is over to create a real vintage individual style.
Let’s just hope the weather remembers that us Brits do like to show off our summer shopping and not always stay in our parkas.
