Jo Butler’s Student Style
30-08-2007
Whether we are swanning into lectures in post gap-year boho regalia or stomping into seminars in five inch heels, nothing quite compares to student fashion.
We spend hours studying magazines and once loaded with our celebrity mentors’ examples; are amongst the first to experiment with daring styles and new trends. One thing is for sure; there is no right and wrong where student fashion is concerned.
I‘ve relished in having the key players on my doorstep and as a fresher quickly teamed the creed -Primark, Peacocks, New Look and Topshop (if you’re rolling in it)!
Before the fashion fund (or loan) ran out at the end of the semester, I invested in some key pieces. A Maxi Dress, Embellished Mini and ‘Gladiator’ Sandals to see me through a summer of holidaying (albeit on the parents) and working at high-fashion mags (OK, maybe interning would be more apt!)
So how has this summer of being skint been? Well, it has actually been fulfilling, fun and a little frantic. I first interned at Plastique, a new luxury high-fashion mag, where I had a taste of the struggles and ultimately triumphs of an independent publication. I’m now interning at New Woman as a Fashion Assistant where I’ve had a mouth-watering preview of this season’s stunning trends.
Dashing around London Town and being submerged in a world of fashion has suggested that maybe my summer Primark essentials don’t quite cut it. However, working alongside other lovely interns has revealed that there is a whole generation of us – students and graduates hungry for success in the fashion world, a desire we pursue with dedication and perseverance.
I am now fervently and intricately planning on which items to blow my loan on when term begins. A pair of leather riding boots, a studded bag and a trusty parka are top on the list.
In September’s blog I will be informing you which trends have been initiated into student-ville. Will we be rocking Elle’s ‘Boho-Tech’ down at the Union? Maybe we’ll be PVC-clad rock chicks at open mic night? Or perhaps just chilling around campus in a pair of 70’s flares? Only time will tell!
