LFW: Gareth Pugh

Maxi coats, broad-shouldered capes, cowl-neck dresses – may all sound like your usual attire for a catwalk collection but there is nothing usual about Gareth Pugh's designs. One of the hottest tickets of the season, the outside of the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane resembled a scrum while the inside was bathed in a heady mix of anticipation and champagne.

 

 
 

 

One by one android-esque models appeared in fierce armour-like silhouettes made up of YKK zips, horse-hair and safety pins. Pugh mentioned that his muse for his latest collection was Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz, but as you can imagine Pugh's interpretation is abstract, dark with an almost barbaric twist.

 

 

The fashion pack adored his sharp, aggressive shapes, Thierry Mugler comes to mind, and while many of these outfits could not be worn on a day-to-day basis there is no doubt that Pugh's craftsmanship gets better with each season. It's this raw creativity that the British fashion scene is best known for – and long may it continue.
