The Malthouse Barking

20-03-2008

The Malthouse building and adjoining sites on Abbey Road have been purchased by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation in order to expand the complex and include a large number of businesses and individuals working in the Creative Industries who collectively will contribute to the development of Barking as a Cultural Hub.

Last night saw the official opening of East London's new creative industry quarter at The Malthouse; an opportunity to experience the wealth of creative talent that is helping to revive the vibrant area.

Peter Andrews the Chief Executive of the Development Corporation, Clive Wilding MD of Barking Riverside and Derek Levy representing Skills, Learning, and Enterprise Division all gave speeches at the event with Counsellor Sid Kallar MBE officially opening the The Malthouse.

Derek Levy spoke about the development programme enabling Fashion Enter to broaden its work with local designers of all ages from across the Borough, and integrate the business of fashion with the wider Borough partnership ambition for clustered growth of creative enterprise centred around this part of Abbey Road and the River Roding.

He also gave a big thank you to John Middleton and the rest of the Development Corporation, reinforced by Simon Green at Vicarage Field, for having the foresight and belief to make a significant financial investment into the establishment of Fashion Enter, and enabling it to make its mark.

The evening was a resounding success with entertainment of live music and dance and a pyrotechnic and laser display. Guests were also able to look around the art and fashion displays during the evening.
