The Last of the Bohemians

03-04-2008

Luxor was talking to a corset designer at the time and both were given the experts review of the latest avant garde fashions as specially selected by Luxor herself. The boutique is a hive of true art and inspiration and is frequented by many celebrities and rock artists in New York looking for that unique look that only Luxor can bring.

However this time Jenny was in for a further treat. She was introduced to Luxor's life long partner and well known artist Jeffrey Norfolk at their home on Wooster Street Soho.

Jeffrey is a tall angular fellow, long hair and a real "gent". Originally Jeffery went into the Foreign Office which was to be only a short interlude in his life. The way of politics, deadlines and endless discussions leading to  nowhere was not the life for Jeffrey. Instead he decided to go to Chelsea College of Art to continue his true passion of art and that's where he began his life long partnership with Luxor. They were both on the same fine art course and he freely admits he was quite captivated by Luxors free spirit and vive la vida. On graduating in the late 1960s they decided to try out the Big Apple and without any money landed in Thompson Street which was then called South Village not Soho.

During the 1970s this area was run by the mafia and gangs. There was always "trouble" on the streets by night and Luxor and Jeffrey felt threatened – they just accepted this as their way of life. Luxor found a job in a hippie restaurant and soon established herself as a true character of fashion and art attracting clients to the restaurant. Jeffrey began his studio and worked on commission paintings. After a few years there was an opportunity for Luxor to buy out the management of the restaurant but instead both Jeffrey and Luxor decided to concentrate on fashion and bought the leasehold of a small shop on West Broadway (similar location to where the retail vintage boutique is now).

Needless to say both businesses flourished. Jeffrey's art work received critical acclaim and Luxor dressed the rock stars and the celebrities from far and wide including David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Jeffrey also started work as a lecturer of art and again this proved to be successful with Jeffrey receiving cult following status from many of his students. Life for both Luxor and Jeffrey was full, rich and exciting. However they both had itchy feet. They wanted to experience the world and decided to embark on a nomadic life so they could be kindred free spirits and experience life.

Perhaps on a whim or perhaps it was all planned and organised but Jeffery and Luxor bought a $450 ticket to travel the world. They were allowed four stops on the ticket that went from New York to London, then on to Milan and then finally to Kabul. Both loved the freedom and then began to lead their lives as travelling Nomads leaving their conventional businesses and lives far behind.

The stories that then followed of both crossing of the deserts, the people they met, the experiences gained makes you realise how safe many of our lives have become. They continued living like this for years, buying new and exciting garments to replenish the NY boutique from across the world and the garments where so unique and different that they sold and sold and sold. It was a period in their lives when there was no fear or danger of failing, that money was not the main derivative of their lives but rather it was theirs for adventure and experience of life that makes you wonder if the world of fashion really is a shallow place to be today.

Eventually they did become travel weary and settled back into the New York way of life. The boutique was still doing well but the swinging 60s and 70s was giving away to a new form of consumerism that did fit the protocol for both Luxor and Jeffrey. They were still the true bohemians that they are today. A leopard can't change its spots and both could not bend to the new emphasis of money.

Today Luxor still has her boutique on 414 West Broadway, New York, 10012 and Jeffrey has his studio where a selection of work is always available for clients. It's a particular art forte that relates to colour and texture and a selection of his work is shown on the gallery………CLICK HERE.

Each piece of work has names ranging from Four Green, Blue Line, Head of Jesus 1, 2 and 3 – each as individual as Jeffrey is himself.

Both Jeffery and Luxors eyes shine brightly – they have lived their lives to the full. They have thrown caution to the wind and decided that the zest of life and raision d'etre was far more than money and success. Success was achieved by their lassiz attitude that attracted fellow followers together. How many people can put their hands on their heart when asked "Do you have any regrets" and the simple reply is "No not any!" More importantly this is a love story that has also lasted the test of time firmly believing in Amor Vincit Omnia – love conquers all.
