Fashion Enter Designers are ‘Going For It’ in New York!

27-03-2008

Gonul from Gonul Couture is one of the designers in New York at the moment, she commented, 'New York is the right place to find the opportunities to sell your product but you have to know what you are doing. We are making the most of our exciting visit and I have been working and working to make sure this trip wirks for me. I have had some good leads and it's very exciting. The guy from Boutique B was brilliant – a lovely man with unusual and unique designs. This was great and he also loved mambo's designs. This trip is just what i needed for my buisness.'

Shopping in ‘The Big Apple’

Hot Spots besides the ever popular Bloomingdales, Macys, Banana Republic and many others…

Here’s a collection of blissful fashion boutiques in NYC, based on their astounding individualism in style and spunk. (All info of which is courtesy of the www.jargol.com website).

Darling
From the stylized font on the window, to the swishy dresses in the window, to the enchanted ambiance inside, Darling serves as an infusion of "girly" for anyone that needs it. The racks are lined with dozens of–what else–dresses and skirts. Slinky dress with pink polka dots, 1950s halter dress, garden party floral dress, sparkly evening dress–just choose your fancy and Darling will oblige, at price points your pocketbook will find agreeable. Besides the plethora of dresses are cute tops, skirts in a variety of lengths and lines and some lovely, lacy lingerie.

I Heart
With labels like these, who wouldn't heart New York? I Heart is what good New York shopping is all about, namely a collection of cutting-edge designers that you're just not going to see put together in any other city. Follow the discrete neon sign (well, as discrete as neon can get) down the stairs into an airy, inspiring space full of arty, often avant-garde clothing and accessories. Look for small designers from Denmark, Australia and the UK alongside under-the-radar New York labels.

Mick Margo
Mick Margo resides in a hidden, but accessible corner of the city. And the clothing and accessories, well, they're hidden but accessible as well. Detailed, feminine clothes and supple leather shoes and accessories come from a host of small designers from New York and Paris, but also San Francisco and LA and even South America and Australia. The well-stocked, oft-changing boutique seems intent of finding that next great emerging talent, whether she's around the corner or all the way across the world.

Plum
As a stylist your raison d'etre is to say ahead of the fashion curve. As a store co-founded by a TV and commercial stylist, Plum serves a similar purpose. The store taps in to the wealth of fashion talent in New York and around the country and presents a collection of beautiful, creative and generally affordable pieces from a roster of designers you likely have not heard of yet. The breezy space is home to flowing dresses, funky boots, sassy jewellery and more.

Kirna Zabete
Finally, a store that completely looks the part of a big city boutique. A massive loft space, super-modern furnishings, a Lucite roof, candy red stair rails–Kirna Zabete is a epitome of a hip city boutique. Oh yes, the merchandise? It lives up to its high-concept surroundings. Avant-garde designs abound–a vibrant collection of girly dresses, flowing tops, sexy boots, trendy high-end handbags and cute jewellery. TG-170
Just about every women's clothing boutique likes to think of itself a pioneering trend-setter, but in rare cases is this actually true. TG-170 is indeed a genuine trendsetter. The store was the first boutique in the Lower East Side and has a long tradition of carrying a mix of new, edgy designers with some more established names mixed in. The clothing can best be described as just-edgy-enough. Which is to say the stuff is imminently wearable, but easily funky and quirky enough to turn heads. Pay special attention to their dresses and skirts. TG-170s picks are hip, sexy and stylish.

Johnson
There are certain women that understand red lipstick–not as a fashion statement but as a life statement. Designer Kim Johnson is such a woman, her boutique Johnson a boon to confident, stylish women everywhere. The look is vintage office meets va-va-va-voom and Johnson pulls it off with aplomb. Classic cuts and shapes (pencil skirts, cigarette pants) meet bold reds, daring stripes and quirky plaids. Johnson has even started a men's line, (aptly named Mr. Johnson) combining the thin lines of vintage shirts with modern, high quality fabrics.

Foley + Corinna
Even half of Foley + Corinna is better than the whole of most stores. You could be looking at the stylish knits dresses, and tops designed by Dana Foley. Or you may be foraging through the funky vintage clothing and accessories collected Ana Corinna. Either way, you can't go wrong. Mix and match Foley's creations with Corinna's finds and you'll seem like the hipper person ever. And all you did was visit one lone, albeit lovely, store.

Claudine
Whoever equates feminine women's clothing and accessories with seven shades of pink and oh-so-precious details ought to visit Albertine and Claudine. The sister stores, only steps away from each other on a quiet street collect feminine fare that's more chic than sugary sweet. Dresses come from young, independent designers or are sometimes one-of-a-kind affairs made of vintage fabric. T-shirts are hand-screened with artful designs. Bags and shoes gleam in gold and silver, both romantic and assertive at the same time. Jewellery is chunky and fun, perfect for mixing and matching.

Jumelle
When paying over a hundred dollars for a top or several hundred dollars for a dress or a pair of shoes, we look for elements that make these pieces special, that distinguish them from similar items that can be bought for one fifth the price. Jumelle can be best described as a collection of clothing and accessories that have that special something. Dresses use fabrics with great textures or a distinctive print, bags use soft leather and heavy, gleaming hardware, jackets have luxurious linings and unique buttons. While other boutiques sell basic T-shirts and sweatpants for more money than such things should ever cost, Jumelle does a good job of gathering pieces that are worthy indulgences.

Ludivine
When it comes to style, one could do a lot worse than emulating Parisian women. Ludivine makes this all the more easier by bringing the Parisian boutique to New York. The feminine boutique presents a collection of clothing and accessories that can normally be found together only in the City of Lights. All the French standard bearers are there: effortlessly stylish dresses, cute flats, flirty A-line skirts and darling coats. To this add non-French names that are popular in Paris like quirky Japanese lines.

Oak
The best clothing shops are really good filters. It's one thing to seek out and stock the hippest labels. It's another thing entirely to irreverently edit these lines to find those handful of pieces that are both stylish and versatile, today and next year. And that's what Oak does. First to go are impractical colours–maybe 75% of the store is black and various shades of gray. Next to go are unimaginative versions of trendy silhouettes. If the bubble skirt is on trend one season Oak tends to pick versions that are different and creative enough to stand on their own long after the trend has passed.

Otte
There's the girly store that you can see from blocks away what with its pink storefront and light blue awning and then there's Otte which markets a more discrete brand of girly-ness. A few strokes of colour whether it be black and turquoise heels or a white skirt with a flower print hint at the clothes and accessories inside. Flowing dresses, sequined tops, strappy heels, lacy underwear–staples of this type of store-are balanced with more casual pieces like T-shirts, jeans, cotton tops as well as dresses and skirts with more modern lines.

Sample
It's rare to walk into a store, especially one as simple as Sample, and want one of everything. It's even more rare in the case of a store such as Sample, that carries a few simple items in multiple colours. When we walked the amazing collection of cashmere sweaters caught out eye–so much so that we considered breaking our cardinal rule of never owning more than one of anything. But, we wanted sweaters in blue and green and black and red. Sweaters to die for, sweaters we could wear for years. Lest you pass this store by because you have enough sweaters thank-you-very-much, the store also carries a beautiful collection of accessories–in many cases speaking to the our core beliefs–a small store able to take chances and carry items from unknown designers. Not only do they carry these items, their staff is able to speak knowledgeably about each item.
