TURNING LONDON RAGGED

“Inspired Recycling is a great scheme which has helped me to realistically plan and develop my recycling project into a workable business.” Nadia Ballan

Inspired Recycling has been helping Nadia Ballan plan the design and manufacture of a new range of recycled content fashion accessories

Summary

Nadia Ballan is a fashion designer with a long-standing commitment to reusing fabrics and textiles in ranges of funky fashion garments and accessories. Nadia co-designed her first fashion collection after being invited to work with Oxfam’s ‘Nologo’ fashion recycling project in 1991. Under the name Boom Cortina, her early collections took a gleeful sideways look at London sub-culture, creating strange hybrids of styles to deliberately subvert and confuse accepted dress codes. A commitment to quality products and considered production contributed to Boom Cortina’s appeal.

In 2005, Nadia approached Inspired Recycling for assistance in developing and funding her new London Ragged project. The Inspired Recycling team assisted Nadia with:

·         discussing the possibilities for a recycled content fashion range

·         assisting with developing a focused project plan for design, development and manufacture of a new product range

·         developing and submitting an application for a London Development Agency Connect grant for £10,000 to help fund the project

The London Ragged Project

London Ragged is building on the success of Boom Cortina with a range of recycled fashion accessories that combine mass production with customisation of products to consumers’ individual preferences. The product range includes rucksacks, bags, hats and gloves for an eco-conscious, socially aware, unisex, middle-youth market.

There is growing demand for ethically and environmentally made products in retail fashion, driving real improvements in a traditionally wasteful industry.

Inspired Recycling helped Nadia address fashion’s wasteful image with the London Ragged project. This range uses recycled materials and ethically and environmentally considered production. It’s encouraging the fashion industry to be more responsible and is developing markets for environmentally sustainable fashion accessories.
