Annex 1:

Rich Mix Learning and Creative Policies

Rich Mix’s Learning Policy

Rich Mix is a dynamic new centre for creative enterprise in the heart of London’s East End. Our aim is to be a hub for cultural engagement and practice connecting practitioners and audiences as participants in the creative process.

The learning activities in the building are focused on the creative and cultural industries – music, design, fashion, the spoken word, digital design and film. Rich Mix offers a space for learning, creating and socialising. Being a work, leisure and learning space, Rich Mix offers the learner a variety of ‘entry points’ to learning. This provides a range of facilities and platforms to make and show work.  We facilitate conversations and work collaboratively in partnership with organisations.

1.      Core Principles

We aim to:

2.   Practice

2.1             Process

Rich Mix creates and sustains relationships with partner organisations which enable them to deliver appropriate learning activities in the building.

Rich Mix initiates and develops learning projects for all ages by consulting with teachers and practitioners to develop programmes, projects and events that are relevant to learners.  A first aim is to have a teachers’ group to act as a sounding board for Rich Mix projects and activities.

Rich Mix ensures that learning experience is of maximum benefit to the learner’s personal and professional development, ensuring where possible that work undertaken in the building is  accredited and/or a clear framework for progression e.g. Specialised 14 – 19 Diploma, BTEC.

Rich Mix facilitates direct links between learners and creative industry professionals either as teachers, speakers, mentors, co-learners or facilitators.

Rich Mix uses the experience of our creative industry tenants, networks and facilities to deliver learning packages or events that complement the curriculum and develop core skills benefiting the learner.

Rich Mix ensures a mix of people engage in learning activities – those that don’t consider themselves learners or ‘creative’ – by working with partners, and employing thoughtful marketing.

Rich Mix will facilitate showcasing of work on a range of platforms. In the first instance this could be work made outside the building.

Rich Mix will create ‘learn by doing’ experiences giving the learner a simulated work experience – following a production process from A to Z – for example planning and making short film and screening it at the cinema.

2.2             Criteria

In order to ensure a fit with Rich Mix’s Core Principles, we will assess Learning proposals and projects against the following criteria:

3.   Structure

Rich Mix is resourced to realise this vision with the following:

·         A learning space – a ‘base’ and ‘entry’ and ‘exit’ point for the learner. It is equipped with ICT, furniture and lockers for personal belongings. This space will be used to ‘set up’ and ‘debrief’ activity that may have taken place in multiple areas within the building

·         Cinemas,  Live and rehearsal space, creative workspaces, music hub, food & social spaces

·         The Rich Mix Learning Department working with other departments and tenants to deliver the learning.

Rich Mix’s Creative & Programming Policy

Rich Mix is a dynamic new centre for creative enterprise in the heart of London’s East End. Our aim is to be a hub for cultural engagement and practice connecting practitioners and audiences as participants in the creative process.

Our Creative programme is based on a broad definition of culture looking at all aspects of audio, visual and performative creativity. Our building offers opportunities for a wide range of programming across a range of platforms. However, more than just a conventional museum or venue, Rich Mix is process focused and is consciously active at all stages of the creative cycle – information, networks, learning, training, product development, testing, presentation and distribution.

·         Rich Mix will develop, build and maintain partnerships that will connect the work, creatives, participants and audiences to the wider cultural industries and other industry sectors.

2.2 Criteria

In order to ensure a fit with Rich Mix’s Core Principles, we will assess creative work against the following criteria:

·         Culture bridging – the opportunities for interaction between communities from different cultural backgrounds.

·         Learning opportunities – opportunities for active learning, personal and/or professional development.

·         Production values – the potential the project has to achieve high production values and represent excellence.

·         Innovation – the level of innovative thought and originality in the proposed ideas.

·         Regeneration potential – the potential to contribute to the economic development of specific communities and/or creative industry sectors.

Rich Mix is resourced to realise this vision with the following:

·         Multiple artform platforms including cinemas, workshops, creative workspaces, food & social spaces and an environment that uses interactive digital technologies to facilitate collective participation in the creative processes underlying the development of programme content. These facilities will allow us to explore themes across a range of artforms exploiting all the available opportunities for engaging with a range of audiences.

·         CAL, the Creative and Learning sub-committee of the Rich Mix board of trustees, an advisory group made up of cultural practitioners and academics, which will monitor and support the application of this policy.

·         The Rich Mix staff team which includes the programmers, producers, development, marketing and learning specialists.
