Former WH Smith executive Alan Stewart has recently been employed to bring about changes in the company. Stewart, who is incredibly experienced and has held senior posts in public companies, is set to join Marks and Spencer’s in October. He will be working alongside Marc Bolland who joined in May after working in Morrisons.

Marks an Spencer’s suffered negative effects after being hit by the recession and potent competition from highly discounted clothing chains like Primark.

The company is hitting back with a new strategy for improving its performance in the long term, with food sales high up on their agenda. At the moment, Stewart is chief financial advisor at craft leasing company AWAS, from 2005 to 2008 he was group finance director at WH Smith and before that he spent seven years at travel agent Thomas Cook
